Vocal Heath of People who Perform Metal Music

This study wants to better understand the voice health of people who perform metal music. People in the study will complete a voice evaluation that takes up to 90 minutes. This provides knowing the overall vocal health. If people move on into the study after the evaluation, participants will complete two recording sessions. One session takes up to 2.5 hours. The other session takes about 2 hours. During the sessions participants will breathe, do throat muscle activities, and have an image of the throat taken while breathing, talking, and singing.

   Location: In Person

Inclusion Criteria

  • Ages 18 years and older
  • Performing/touring as a semi-professional or professional metal artist often utilizing powerful, aggressive, and sometimes unconventional vocal techniques.

Exclusion Criteria

  • Implanted device in head or neck
  • History of or current neurological problems, such as stroke, movement disorders, brain tumors, traumatic brain injury with loss of consciousness
  • Psychiatric problems, such as schizophrenia, bipolar depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder,
  • Alcoholism and/or drug dependence
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding
